Matt Walter is a PGA Teaching Professional for Vanderbilt Legends Club. He recently started working there after spending 5 1/2 years at Westhaven Golf Club. While at WGC, he developed their junior golf programs to be one of the top in programs in the area. He graduated from Mississippi State University’s PGA Golf Management Program in 2011. While there he held the position of PGM Club President in the last semester before graduation. Prior to MSU, Matt graduated High School from Manheim Township in Lancaster, PA. The same high school that Jim Fuyrk attended and Matt played for the same high school golf coach. While on the team Matt was a 2 time Varsity Letterman. He Co-Captained the L-L League Champions his Senior season with an undefeated record while ranked 4th in the State of Pennsylvania.
What makes Matt an excellent golf coach is understanding a players needs. He has the innate ability to communicate with the player. While also helping them understand the complexity of the golf swing. Matt knows that golf is more than just a game and during lessons he inspires players to be more than they thought they could be as an individual or as a player. He has had the opportunity to work with players of all skill levels from beginners to the professionals. As a result, Matt can communicate and see the necessary pieces that will help improve your game. While some coaches may fit you into a model. Matt sees to that he brings out the strengths in your game while improving your weaknesses. He knows there are many ways to swing a club and different body types can get the job done. There is no one answer to make the ball fly the way you want!
Junior Golf has always been a passion for Matt. He helped his golf coach in high school run junior golf programs. Since Matt has become a PGA Professional, he has helped high school junior golfers acquire scholarships to play at the collegiate level. He was the PGA Junior League coach for Westhaven’s junior team. Furthermore he coached the Nashville Area All-Star team in 2013, 2015, and 2016. In the PGA Tennessee Section, Matt sits as the Middle TN Junior Golf Committee chairman, a position he acquired in 2013. Also, Matt is a U.S. Kids Certified Coach and a certified coach with PCA –Positive Coaching Alliance. He has won the TN Section PGA Youth Player Development Award in 2014 and was voted a Top 50 US Kids Instructor in 2015 and 2016.
In addition to teaching, Matt is an accomplished club fitter who worked exclusively with Tim Sygerych, Master Club Fitter. While Tim worked for Nick Faldo and developed one of the best fitting procedures to allow golfers to have well equipped clubs. He believes having the right equipment can make the game not only more enjoyable but more fun when the equipment matches the player. With the use of TrackMan Radar and fitting methods learned from Tim Sygerych, Matt can get you in the right equipment to maximize your potential as a golfer.
